Sharptooth Disciple by KelpGull Sharptooth Disciple by KelpGull
Request for :iconjulianr94:, a scene from the fanfiction 'The Eighth Hunter.'
Had a lot of fun trying to get a desaturated look, but with a bit of color for emphasis.

I think in the story it's supposed to be an oversized Utahraptor, but that description does fit Daktoaraptor pretty well XD

If it is, that's something I haven't seen before. 10/10 would read that fanfic again.

This would be even better if the wing feathers extended to the middle finger. Raptors had actual wings, not just arms with feathers sticking out. This guide should help:

I have seen those, and they are very helpful as far as scientific illustration goes. This piece, however, was done in a cartoonish Land Before Time style, which has certain character design cues that are suited to the simplified forms needed in low budget animation. Also, most forms in the animal kingdom, when used in cartoons, are somewhat anthropomorphized around the hands and face to keep their gestures and acting clear enough for humans to understand.

Good guides, though, and thanks for the feedback :) I will certainly keep them in mind for reference when doing more realistic illustrations.

I will simply have to repeat my words from the GOF forum:

Absolutely amazing work, Darkwolf! :) (Smile)  I think that you have captured the essence of Specter and Chaser extremely well. The juxtaposition of their brutal forms with the beautiful sky above further enhances the overall scene. One could very easily feel the tension in the air.

Awesome work. :) (Smile)

Thank you! I really enjoyed trying to convey the scene through their body language. And I'm glad you like the sky! I felt like something patchy suited the scene well, with vivid colors behind the cloud cover. Kind of like the tumultuous thoughts and motives working within the two guarded predators :D

Thanks again for the feedback!

Need to calm down first as I can't hold back my wide grin.
Ok... Ok, good to go, I guess.
Where do I even start? To sum it up, two words should be enough: Spot on.

And while did in fact imagine the big scars not on Chaser's leg but his main body, I said "on his side", which includes his leg, too, of course and that's where you've put it, and that's where it looks perfect regardless.

As for the rest: I simply have nothing to say but that you have done an outstanding job in my eyes. Every little detail is there, even the ones I've added after you've already started with it.

But really, words cannot express how much I like this piece of work here. All I can say is that I can't wait for what you will come up with next. And I'm writing that while I'm still smiling.
Keep it up!

Aaaah, on his side. For some reason I immediately pictured it on his leg, I suppose because it's such a prominent part of his anatomy. I'm glad it still looks alright where I put it :XD:

So glad you like it! It was so much fun to set the scene, the chapter you referred me to was quite vivid! I'll have to read the rest of the fic when I get some free time :D

No worries, this is the sole thing I could possibly complain about, which I won't.
Glad you liked the chapter as well, even though it was very much ripped out of context. I'd certainly be honored if you'd give the rest a shot, too. :)
